Here in West Oakland, many folks that wanted to create a “conscious” POC community looked down at and spoke bad about the Black folks who hung out on the corners listening to their music loud and tried to create drum circles and coffee shops as “positive” spaces. Meanwhile, the folks they looked down at were having BBQs everyday and massive block parties. The folks on the corner drinking, smoking weed, and listening to Lil Wayne on blast WERE the indigenous drum circle. Yet they correctly felt overlooked by this group of conscious black folks.
